Can You Afford To Not Have Public Liability Insurance?

For many businesses, particularly small businesses, insurance is considered a luxury item.  It is something that would be nice to have and that you intend to purchase in the future.  But for the time being, you simply feel like you cannot justify the additional expense.  And it is true that the cost of a comprehensive insurance package can be a bit overwhelming.  The real question is whether or not the risk of not having the insurance is worth it.  Public liability insurance can feel rather expensive, but when you consider the crippling effect of a liability lawsuit without this insurance, the alternative is far worse.  Take the time to explore public liability insurance and determine whether or not you can afford to not insure yourself from this type of business risk.

What Is Public Liability Insurance?

Public liability insurance is business insurance to protect you in case “the public” get injured at your place of business or as a result of your business dealings elsewhere.  This insurance type is intended to protect your business from lawsuits that come as a result of someone being injured at your place of business.

While any business in which the public visits has some risk of this kind of litigation, there are more accident prone industries that require this type of insurance protection.  Any industry in which there are large crowds or that facilitate the movement of large groups of people should be extra sensitive to their public liability insurance needs.  Arenas, shopping centers, clubs, hotels, convention centers, and other crowd oriented industries are good examples of these types of prone industries.

But just because your business doesn’t have the public flowing through the doors does not mean you are not vulnerable.  Simply having a client trip and fall on your premises can be enough to warrant a liability suit.

Public liability insurance is designed to protect you from these sorts of unfortunate happenings.  In today’s litigious society, businesses simply cannot take these types of risks if they hope to sustain their business into the future.

As a side note, personal as opposed to public liability insurance is personal not business wide protection from litigation.

What Does Public Liability Insurance Cost?

The best way to determine what your cost will be is to put in the effort to find a couple different public liability insurance quotes.  The cost of public liability insurance will vary widely between industries.  Industries in which there is a much lower risk of needing to file a claim will undoubtedly have lower premium costs.

Finding cheap liability insurance is simply a matter of finding the liability insurance company that best supports your company’s specific needs.  Each company will come back with a different public liability insurance quote, and will have a number of additional services or features that their competitors will not have.

When you begin the process of finding a liability insurance quote, you will need to have prepared a number of things regarding your business.  The insurance company will want to know some specific information about your company.  Be prepared with your industry, number of employees, locations, corporation type, annual turnover of goods/services, nature of products/services, etc.

The better information you provide, the better the quote the broker or agent will be able to prepare for you.  It does you no good to mislead the insurance agent during the quote process.  The quote is only a starting point and rough estimate of what coverage would cost.  During the application process, you will be required to give justification and proof your answers.

Don’t worry that your industry seems unlikely to have a specific package catered for it, you may be surprised.  You can even find self employed public liability insurance.  When it comes down to it, most if not all businesses require it.  You should also check with your state and local governments, many are now requiring all businesses in their area to purchase public liability insurance.

Common misspellings:  public liabilty insurance, public liablity insurance
